Overview

The Renaissance means rebirth in french. It was the rebirth of Greek and Roman Classical culture it ran from 1350-1600. It marks the death of the Middle Ages and the Beginning of the Modern times. As in athens that is were all the philosiphers were, Florence, Italy was were all the smart people were like the Medici family.The Medici family was probably one of the more famous families at that time. Giovanni Medici was credited by starting the Renaissance and building projects beutify Florence. Lorenzo Medici was nicknamed "The Magnificent" and he ruled Florence from 1469-1492. Humanities was the basis of the Renaissance and it was about grammar, history, poetry, and art. The Renaissance man was a well rounded indivdual who did everything well he was the ideal person. A good example of this person is probably Leonardo Da Vinci he was good at everything. Now the Renaissance women was a very determined person like Isabella d' Est e, she was The First lady of the World and was known for her intelligence and political wisdom.
The Renaissance did not only mark the end of the Middle ages it also marked the rebirth of culture and the beginning of Modern times. The Renaissance was a period of culture and knowledge, many philosopher flourished during this time period. Many people like Giovanni Medici, Leonardo Da Vinci or even Isabella d' Este flourshied during this period of time. The Renaissance era was great time for cultural influence and this era still affects people today.

Important People

  1. William Shakespeare-He is the most famous poet and playwrights of all time. He made some of the most well known plays of all time, plays like Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet. Everyone has heard or even said at least one line of one of his plays
  2. Leonardo Da Vinci- He was a man that did many things during the Renaissance. He painted, invented he even sculpted and he did many more things. Some of his famous art pieces are the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper.
  3. Martin Luther- He didn't believe in what the Catholic Church was doing so he stapled the 95 thesis to the Cathedral. Those 95 thesis said all of the negative things the Catholic Church was doing. Without him we wouldn't have the modern day religion Lutheran.
  4. Johann Gutenburg- With out Johann we wouldn't have many of our books today. You see he was the inventor of the printing press and he copied all the books there was like the Bible was the big book. Before the press only rich people could own books, but now everyone could have a book to read.
  5. Sir Isaac Newton- He might be one of the world most famous scientist. He studied the laws of motion. Without him our sciences classes could be very different today.

Dowry: The dowry was a sum of money given by the wife's family to the husband upon marriage, the most important aspect of the marriage contract was the size of the dowry.

Humanism: The study of the classics, the literary works of ancient Greece and Rome, Humanists studied such things as grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy, and history all based on works of ancient Greek and Roman authors.
Salvation: What ordinary people desired was meaningful religious expression and assurance of their acceptance into Heaven, as a result of this the process of obtaining salvation became almost mechanical.
Indulgence: By giving large sums of money or a relic a person could be released from all or part of the punishment for sin.
